Diageo Aims to Make Bulleit Distillery Operations Carbon-Free

(Bloomberg) —

Spirits giant Diageo PLC said its newest distillery, which will produce one of America’s most popular whiskeys, will be carbon-neutral.

The plant in Lebanon, Kentucky, which will be used for Bulleit Bourbon and other whiskeys, will use renewable energy to cut gas emissions, Diageo said in a statement. When operations begin in 2021, local crops will supply up to 10 million proof gallons of liquor per year.

The distillery will be the third in Kentucky for Diageo, which aims to be powered fully by renewable electricity by 2030. The company, which also owns the Smirnoff, Bailey’s and Don Julio brands, says the plant will be one of the largest sustainable liquor production sites in North America.

Sophie Kelly, who oversees Diageo’s whiskey portfolio in North America, said sustainable operations will help drive consumer preference.

The distillery features lowered roofs to reduce heating and cooling requirements, warehouse lights that activate only during loading and unloading, and solar-powered exterior lights. The site is expected to offset 117,000 metric tons of carbon emissions annually — the equivalent of taking 25,000 cars off the road for a year.

Construction of the Diageo Lebanon distillery began in July 2019. The company said it would take on 30 new hires to run the location, and the total project cost is estimated at $130 million.
